Matsyagandha Lake

Development of Matsyagandha Lake, Saharsa: A Mythical Journey into Bihar’s New Tourism Frontier

As Bihar Tourism expands its vision beyond traditional spiritual hubs like Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, and Nalanda, the Development of Matsyagandha Lake in Saharsa marks a bold step toward creating an alternate tourist destination under the SASCI scheme refers to the "Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment" initiative, which includes a component for developing Iconic Tourist Centers. Launched by the Ministry of Tourism to develop and brand iconic tourist destinations at a global scale. This project blends mythology, modern infrastructure, and immersive storytelling to offer visitors a unique cultural experience rooted in the epic legacy of the Mahabharata.

The Significance of Matsyagandha Lake

Located in the heart of Saharsa district, Matsyagandha Lake is a 1.5 km long and 200 m wide artificial lake, originally conceptualized in 1996 by then District Collector Tej Narayan Lal Das. Once a neglected cremation ground, the site was transformed into a serene water body, symbolizing renewal and reverence. Named after Matsyagandha, the mythological figure who later became Satyavati, queen of Hastinapura and mother of Sage Vyasa, the lake is steeped in epic lore and spiritual symbolism.
The lake holds deep cultural and spiritual significance, symbolizing transformation, resilience, and renewal. With recent support from the Central Government, including a ₹97 crore investment, the site is being developed into a world-class tourism destination.
